Bema – Community of the Sacred Heart

In 1996 , Cluny Sisters were entrusted by Bishop Paul Marx with the running of the Bema Catholic High School, situated close to Kaintiba in the mountains of the Gulf Province.

The only transport to most of the students’ villages is by foot, many of them walking two to three days to reach school. Apart from a few students from nearby villages, all are boarders. To obtain food for them is a challenge, as rice and tin fish are carried from a store a day’s walk away.

From Bema, the students who qualify go to senior secondary schools, and we have many past students working in the mountains as teachers and health workers.
